Modern Shaker Bar & Media Area with Golf Simulator in Berkshire

This client-led renovation in Berkshire was delivered in collaboration with Rumsby Homes Ltd, transforming an underused indoor pool room into a refined entertainment space designed entirely around the way the homeowners now live

The original pool had not been used for many years. It was costly to maintain and no longer suited the household’s lifestyle. Rather than leaving valuable square footage dormant, the brief was to create a purposeful, year-round space centred on their new golf simulator, with space for entertaining, relaxed evenings for family and friends.

The design needed to incorporate a fully equipped bar, generous refrigeration, wine storage, a curved seating area for hosting and a media wall capable of housing a 98-inch television. A multi-purpose room, the design also includes discreet lighting to create a cohesive flow across the full width of the back wall making the space unified rather than segmented.

A Bespoke Modern Shaker Bar for Entertaining

The bar and media cabinetry was crafted in a Davonport lay-on shaker style with generous 70mm stiles and rails and an ovalo bead detail, reinforcing the architectural presence of the furniture. Hand-painted in a semi-matt muted sage green, the finish delivers a calm, contemporary tone that feels warm and inviting.

The curved bar is the defining feature. It introduces a sculptural element that softens the linear run of cabinetry while clearly distinguishing the bar from the adjoining media zone. At the same time, it maintains continuity across the room. The curve provides generous seating for guests and discreetly conceals the sink, dishwasher, and drawer storage behind it, keeping the bar’s working elements hidden during social occasions.

On the back run, the tall wine cooler is the central feature, whilst integrated cooling appliances ensure cold drinks and ice are always readily available when hosting.

The main worktop is Coral Clay Suede engineered quartz, which is mitred to 50mm, creating visual weight and refinement. Above, a matching mitred stone shelf provides a display ledge for spirits, set against an antique bronze mirror splashback that adds depth and subtle glamour.

Integrated lighting gently reflects onto the bronze mirror behind the open shelving, enhancing the atmosphere without overpowering the space.

A Media Wall Designed for Impact and Balance

The media wall provides a strong architectural backdrop to the 98-inch television, with storage cabinetry below and open shelving on either side aligned precisely with the bar furniture. Tongue and groove panelling introduces texture and reinforces the modern Shaker aesthetic, while discreet lighting enhances depth and ambience.

The space now transitions effortlessly from daytime golf simulation to evening film viewing, creating a versatile environment that feels considered and cohesive rather than purely functional.

Reconfiguring the Utility Room for Practical Living

As part of the wider renovation, the utility room was comprehensively redesigned to resolve longstanding frustrations. The existing space lacked storage, was visually dominated by boilers and manifolds and felt cramped due to a staircase positioned directly over the doorway.

By removing the staircase and reworking the layout, the room was significantly opened up. Tall cabinetry now conceals the boiler systems and pipework, restoring visual order and making the space feel calm and organised. Laundry appliances are positioned for ease of use, surrounded by practical storage. A generous sink run provides ample space for rinsing and soaking, while extra-tall wall units maximise the full ceiling height.

A Study Area Designed for Quiet Organisation

Adjoining the bar, the study required dedicated storage to keep books, files and paperwork neatly contained.

A dresser-style unit was introduced, hand-painted to complement the overall palette, ensuring the room feels cohesive yet distinct. The cabinetry frames the clients’ antique desk without competing with it, allowing character pieces to remain the focal point.

This project demonstrates how intelligent design can completely redefine underused areas within a home. What was once an expensive-to-maintain and dormant pool room is now a purposeful, year-round entertainment environment centred on lifestyle and enjoyment.

The success of the space lies in the detail. The curve of the breakfast bar, the careful alignment of cabinetry, the concealed services within the utility and the considered use of lighting all contribute to a result that feels calm, balanced and highly functional.

For homeowners undertaking renovations in Berkshire, London, Surrey, or Buckinghamshire, this project demonstrates how expert design and thoughtful cabinetry can unlock the full potential of your property, creating spaces that are not only beautiful but also genuinely tailored to the way you live.
