The family came to KCA as they were overhauling their two-bedroom bungalow, which had previously belonged to their granddad, expanding it into a spacious four-bedroom house with a striking new layout. The couple had visited several kitchen companies looking for the wow factor. After going through the consultation process, we were delighted that they chose KCA to execute their vision for the space.
The clients already had a builder attached to the project, so we worked closely with them to ensure a smooth and cohesive process. The brief was to create a minimalist, modern, open-plan living space.
We approached the entire space holistically, seamlessly blending the kitchen and dining areas to create a social hub for the family. Ample storage, the latest appliances, hardwearing, and easy-to-clean materials offer easy maintenance and practicality.
The design features minimalist design elements juxtaposed with industrial finishes. The cabinets combine two door finishes in an unusual dark marble and pale neutral to create a bold, high-contrast aesthetic. The clients were unsure how far to extend the kitchen into the room, so we advised breaking up the zones with a bar area. The bar area perfectly accommodates garden and dinner parties whilst bridging the gap between kitchen and living.
Key design features include the two-tone textured island, floating metal shelving above the bar area and the integrated bookshelf. The open shelving creates the perfect space for family cookbooks, adding a flash of colour and personality to the design.
When designing the space, we considered the ceiling within the design to create another layer of interest and depth. Perhaps one of the most striking features in this kitchen is the ceiling-mounted hanging extractor above the island. The extractor design mimics open shelving in a modern matt black finish, featuring space to hang utensils and spices to keep surfaces free. The dedicated plant growing area offers space to store pots of herb plants with built-in lighting to stimulate their growth.
