The owners of builders JS Ltd were carrying out an extensive renovation of their own home, a Victorian townhouse a stone’s throw from Clapham Common. The renovation encompassed every room of the house, including an extension and loft conversion. Needing to explore new suppliers who could meet the premium level design ambitions for this project, they approached KCA. The KCA team’s proven design expertise and ability to manage complex renovation briefs were key factors in securing the collaboration.
The brief called for a farmhouse kitchen with a lightly contemporary edge. The design needed to be elegant yet timeless, with functionality to suit family life. A new baby on the way added pressure for seamless, timely delivery and robust, thoughtful design.
The KCA team designed a scheme that balances traditional charm with modern practicality. The kitchen has shaker cabinets with beading detail, painted in Sage Grey to offer flexibility in layering materials and tones. The painted finish allows the worktops to sing, which are a real showpiece of the kitchen. The kitchen colour scheme creates a calming, complementary backdrop to the room, enabling the family to bring in warmth through wooden furnishings.
The material for the worktop and splashback was chosen for its visual impact and premium look, with a polished finish that reflects light from the bifold garden doors, bringing a lift against the hand-painted cabinetry. Antique brass handles and a brass Quooker tap pair beautifully with the cabinets and worktops, bringing a touch of understated luxury to the space.
Contemporary design features elevate the kitchen beyond standard farmhouse style. While the range cooker is a staple of a farmhouse kitchen, it is paired with a minimalist, integrated cooker hood. The extractor is boxed in without additional flourishes like a mantle or beading, instead it’s beauty is in its sharp lines and simplicity. The classic farmhouse sink takes on a new look too, with a modern alternative that flows seamlessly into the worktop.
Key lifestyle-led inclusions like the tall pantry, large-capacity refrigeration, boiling water tap, and high-performance extraction make the space as hardworking as it is beautiful. A sociable island and an emphasis on indoor-outdoor flow establish the kitchen as the true hub of the home, in all seasons.
