This stylish modern kitchen renovation in Berkshire reflects how carefully considered design can completely transform a home remodel. The clients had recently moved in and wanted to open-up the layout, replacing a tired and disconnected kitchen with something modern, elegant and easy to live with. The original space was closed off from the adjoining orangery by a dividing wall, with outdated freestanding appliances, limited storage and a style that didn’t suit their taste.
KCA was brought in by long-term collaborators and build partners Rumsby Homes to redesign the space as part of a wider home renovation. Removing the dividing wall unlocked the full potential of the layout, allowing the kitchen and orangery to become one flowing, open-plan space designed for everyday living and entertaining.
At the centre of the design is a bold, L-shaped island. A true centerpiece offering generous storage, integrated appliances and a striking mitred breakfast bar. A structural column, once a challenge, has been cleverly incorporated into the island and clad in antique mirror to reflect the garden beyond. The hob was carefully positioned to face into the room, supported by a downdraft extractor, making cooking a sociable and inclusive experience. This layout allows the cook to engage with guests or family while preparing food, creating a more connected and welcoming environment. The downdraft extractor ensures clean sightlines and an uncluttered look, rising only when in use to preserve the sleek design of the island.
The sink is framed by tall cabinetry and set against a full-height antique mirrored splashback, bringing light and depth into the space. This detail is mirrored on the opposite wall, where floating shelves and a dedicated bar area create balance and visual harmony within the room.
Storage has been carefully planned to maintain a clean, uncluttered look. A hidden larder and double pantry provide space for dry goods and small appliances, while tall cabinetry wraps neatly into the orangery to unify the two zones. A discreet warming drawer adds convenience when hosting.
The kitchen is fitted with modern German furniture, chosen for its contemporary style, premium finish and lasting quality. The kitchen design is finished in a warm, contemporary palette of Taupe and Graphite Satin Lacquer, complemented by Silk Grey Oak framing and shelves. Handleless graphite rails maintain a streamlined, minimalist look. Premium appliances include Miele Pure-Line ovens, a Quooker Pro 3 Flex boiling water tap in stainless steel, and a Caple wine cooler chosen by our kitchen designers for their trusted performance.
