A Stylish, Sociable Kitchen with a Statement Layered Island

Our clients were building a new house that was better suited to their family lifestyle. Moving from a four-story townhouse to a more manageable two-level home, they sought a kitchen that reflected their love for sleek, contemporary design and social living and approached KCA after being recommended by their builder, Crew Builders.

The brief from our clients was to maximise the new space with a stylish, sociable kitchen featuring a statement island. They knew from their previous kitchen what didn’t work: it was challenging to socialise while cooking, and the high breakfast bar seating didn’t foster the communal living they wanted.

They wanted their new kitchen to enable them to cook and engage with their friends and family simultaneously. By positioning the induction hob in the centre of the island, we made this the hub of the room so that they would be facing their friends while cooking instead of a wall. We also integrated a dining table into the island to create a comfortable, casual dining space for family meals and entertaining. This layered statement island maximises floor space and provides the perfect social area where the cook can interact with guests while preparing food. The soft, tactile matte finish of the dining table is made from Dekton, allowing hot trays of food to be placed directly on to it. This is perfect for taking food from the oven straight to the table, ready for everyone to enjoy. To further accommodate guests, we also designed a comfortable bench seat alongside the table that is ideal for lounging.

Contemporary kitchen design with dark timber, bronze mirror splashback, and open shelving with accent lighting

This modern, asymmetric kitchen design utilises layers, a mix of cabinetry styles and materials to create interest and depth. The material palette embraces statement finishes that complement each other. Natural dark timber pairs perfectly with the bronze mirror splashback smoked glass cabinetry, and statement tortoise effect Dekton worktops. The bronze mirror from the splashback continues to the leg of the dining table to create the illusion of a floating cantilevered table; a striking feature that elevates the design. On the back wall, open shelving with contemporary lighting breaks up the run of the cabinetry and adds another focal point to the room. A standout feature of this kitchen is the secret walk-through into the utility room, a delightful surprise that conceals the utility space with a seamless run of tall cabinets.

The kitchen combines style and practicality, with premium German furniture and Dekton worktops chosen for their quality, functionality, durability, and sustainability. To complete the modern look, the furniture combines handleless rails, knurled brass handles, and integrated LED accent lighting perfect for evening entertaining.

This distinctive kitchen is monochromatic, but far from boring. This design is an exceptional example of how the right combination of finishes and design details can create drama and impact, even in the absence of colour.
