A Light-Filled, Handleless Shaker Kitchen

We were thrilled when our clients, a family of four and canine companion Maple, came back to KCA for their second kitchen. This time, they tasked us with a full re-design of their kitchen to infuse new life into their home in Berkshire. There wouldn’t be an extension, so the existing footprint needed to be reimagined, including any structural enhancements that would give them the space they desired. The aim was to create a contemporary, open-plan kitchen that could seamlessly transition from a baking haven to a lively space for hosting dinner parties.

Caroline, the resident baking enthusiast, was tired of being confined within the walls of her previous kitchen. So, the first step involved breaking down barriers, quite literally. By knocking down a wall, we enlarged the kitchen, opening up possibilities for a more spacious and functional layout. This transformation was not just about adding square footage to the kitchen; it was about creating a warm, comfortable environment for both cooking and spending time with family and friends.

One of the couple’s desires was to flood their kitchen with natural light. To achieve this, we proposed to extend the height of the kitchen window by removing bricks below and templating a new window. This decision turned out to be a crucial move, as it not only allowed sunlight to cascade into the room but also became a cherished feature of their new kitchen. Even the decision to block up another window for a clean run of cabinets didn’t compromise the light levels, thanks to the heightened main window.

The couple loved the colour blue but were hesitant to commit to a blue kitchen in case their tastes changed in the future. Their colour choice was an important decision, especially as the high-quality shaker cabinetry was built to last several decades. To solve this, we proposed a neutral kitchen with painted blue walls, adding a pop of colour that could be easily updated for a fresh look. This decision satisfied their love for the colour blue whilst providing a versatile backdrop for future kitchen makeovers. A modern take on a Shaker kitchen, the design features stainless steel appliances, mirrored splashback, and a handless doors for clean, contemporary lines.

The open-plan design, coupled with ample work surfaces, created the perfect setting for Caroline’s culinary creations and laid-back gatherings with friends and family. Their beloved piano was also incorporated into the design, ensuring it had pride of place at the centre of the room.

To ensure the kitchen could withstand the demands of frequent baking sessions and daily use, we opted for Silestone worktops – the most stain-resistant quartz material on the market. This not only added a touch of elegance to the kitchen but also ensured durability, making it the ideal choice for a kitchen that’s always bustling with activity.

By prioritising natural light, functionality, and a splash of colour, we created a space that not only meets the family’s current needs but also adapts to their evolving tastes. The kitchen is now a hub of creativity, warmth, and connection – a place where baking dreams come to life and cherished memories are made.
