A Modern Shaker Kitchen Connecting Old & New
This modern shaker kitchen was created as part of a carefully planned extension to a family home in Ascot. Having lived in the property for over 20 years, the homeowners wanted to replace an underperforming conservatory with a well-insulated space that could be used comfortably year-round.
The brief was to design a kitchen that felt contemporary and functional while remaining sympathetic to the house’s character. The new space needed to bring cooking, dining and relaxing together, creating a shared environment for everyday family life.
A large central island sits at the centre of the layout, incorporating an induction hob with a downdraft extractor. This allows cooking without interrupting views across the open-plan space and supports the sociable way the family wanted to use the kitchen.
Seating along the back of the island provides a relaxed spot for informal meals and conversation. Reduced-depth cabinetry to the rear adds valuable storage, while deep drawers beneath the hob accommodate pots, pans and everyday cookware. Clear circulation is maintained through the kitchen and into the adjoining dining and seating areas.
Storage and balance were central to the design. Tall cabinetry was arranged symmetrically along the main wall, framing the sink run and creating a strong focal point. These units house integrated refrigeration, larder storage and modern ovens, allowing the homeowners to cook comfortably during the summer months without relying on the Aga.
The sink and dishwasher sit centrally, with generous worktop space on either side to keep the layout practical and uncluttered. A full-height stone splashback provides a clean backdrop to the sink area, while discreet under-unit lighting enhances both task lighting and design impact.
We specified Häcker Systemat cabinetry throughout, valued for its German precision engineering, quality and durability. Finished in a Graphite Satin Lacquer Shaker, it offers a modern interpretation of a classic door style that remains in keeping with the home.
Soft white engineered quartz worktops, polished with a double bevel edge, bring lightness and refinement to the scheme. The worktop’s subtle veining is complemented by stainless steel bar handles, introducing a crisp, contemporary contrast.
Designed as part of the wider extension, the kitchen benefits from generous natural light from rooflights and glazing, allowing the space to adapt easily between cooking, entertaining and everyday family life.
The original kitchen, which included an Aga, remained in its existing location. While ideal in winter, the Aga was less practical in the warmer months, prompting the addition of modern ovens in the new kitchen area. The adjoining Aga area was later updated, with the original cabinetry removed and matching storage added to ensure a cohesive connection between the original house and the extension. The Aga’s bold primary red finish provides a striking contrast to the otherwise monochrome palette.
The result is a calm, well-resolved modern shaker kitchen that balances everyday practicality with timeless design.
