For this project, we created a sophisticated and enduring Shaker-style kitchen as part of a home renovation and modest extension. The brief was to create a kitchen that not only met the functional needs of our clients and their interests but also provided an inviting atmosphere for hosting their close-knit family gatherings.
A kitchen designed for a passionate baker who enjoys conjuring up delightful cakes and treats, the design needed to factor in plenty of storage, worktop space and a workflow ideal for baking and preparing food. In addition, the clients also wished for a designated place for their cherished coffee machine.
The new kitchen features a thoughtfully designed kitchen island, encompassing plenty of practical drawer storage and preparation space with a breakfast bar for comfortable casual dining. The kitchen worktops are Silestone, carefully chosen for its durable, stain-resistant qualities. The island also incorporates a sink and a patinated brass Quooker Fusion tap for convenient cold, hot, and boiling water from one tap.
A must-have for any baker, the kitchen has Siemens built-in double ovens at eye level. The wall-mounted ovens allow baking multiple items at once at different temperatures, making it easier for large or varied meals. The height of the ovens makes it easier to take trays in and out whilst also allowing the baker to keep a close eye on their creations.
The kitchen cabinetry is classic shaker in a warm neutral colour, accentuated by antique brass cup and knob handles. The client wished to keep their large range cooker, so we designed deeper stepped-out units on either side of the cooker to accommodate this much-loved appliance. To create a feature of the cooker, we designed a faux chimney by boxing in the kitchen extraction and adding an iconic shaker mantel. This subtle design technique gives the room a new architectural feature that feels as though it’s always been there. To further enhance the feature wall, we opted for glazed wall units on either side of the mantel. The glazed units break up the tall run of furniture, whilst the integrated lighting creates opulence and the perfect mood lighting.
To create a comfortable space for entertaining, we designed a small, designated drinks zone with a built-in wine cooler conveniently next to the dining area. The positioning of the wine cooler ensures makes it easy for our clients to host friends without disrupting the cooking zones or having to leave the room and miss out on conversation with friends. Open shelving, tailored to the width of the wine cooler, adds both function and visual symmetry, providing an ideal display for wine glasses.
Lastly, recognising the importance of a well-placed coffee station, we created a dedicated space for the client’s barista style coffee machine. Positioned away from the main cooking area so that perfectly brewed coffees can be prepared during breakfast or for friends without disrupting the main cooking space.
