Our clients recently completed a home renovation, aiming to create an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area after their children moved out. They reached out to us, inspired by a friend’s recommendation and our work on Instagram, to bring a fresh and functional perspective to their new kitchen space.
The goal was to design a kitchen that complemented the new open-plan area and addressed functional issues. The clients were particularly dissatisfied with the lack of storage and the existing layout’s lack of design flair in their old kitchen. Our objective was to create a stylish kitchen with ample storage that seamlessly integrates with the new open-plan living space, maintaining the same flooring throughout for continuity.
Given the spatial constraints of the kitchen space, we retained the original kitchen layout but introduced significant upgrades to meet the client’s needs. To tackle the storage issue, we utilised modern German furniture known for its high functionality and sleek design. To address any storage concerns, we designed the kitchen with reduced-height plinths and extra-tall units extending to the ceiling, utilising every inch of the kitchen footprint without compromising the minimalist modern style. Additionally, we incorporated drawers across the island and a pull-out larder unit for enhanced accessibility and everyday practical storage space.
After considering various colour options for the furniture, the clients chose a modern palette of natural Umbra, Cognac Vintage Oak, and black accents to create a cohesive design narrative between the kitchen and the newly renovated open-plan living space. The modern handless cabinetry creates a clean contemporary design whilst the rich and textured warm oak harmonises perfectly with the cosy shade of the natural umbra. The back wall of the kitchen design utilises the darker oak cabinetry for a moody, sophisticated look, which we carry into the dining area. We selected Dekton Sirius for the worktops because of its durability and deep black finish.
An open-plan space that requires excellent yet quiet ventilation, the clients opted for a statement metal-framed Falmec Spazio extractor. The additional smoked glass shelving is perfect for a kitchen herb garden, while the extractor can be equipped with a ladle hanger, spice shelf, or tablet holder. The black kitchen hardware, including the black Quooker tap, complemented the client’s metal frame side tables and window frames.
Designing for the way the clients like to cook we designed the induction hob on one side of the island, allowing for ample prep space on one side. To ensure design balance, we repositioned the bank of ovens and extractor. Given the clients’ love for cooking with fresh ingredients, we ensured that the refrigerator was close to the ovens and hob, whilst the less frequently used freezer could be positioned at the front of the kitchen.
This kitchen transformation showcases how thoughtful design can rejuvenate a space to meet aesthetic and practical needs. Our clients now enjoy a kitchen that not only looks spectacular but is also designed for their lifestyle, making daily activities more enjoyable. This new kitchen is a practical, stylish space that the clients can appreciate for many years to come.
