A Classic Shaker Media Wall with Built-In Storage

This bespoke media wall was designed for a returning KCA client, following the successful completion of their kitchen five years earlier.

The original living room featured a long six-metre wall, previously occupied by a television and occasional furniture. While functional, it felt underwhelming, with limited storage and very little opportunity to display personal items. The brief was to create a fully built-in media wall that would bring structure, warmth and purpose to the space, while sitting comfortably alongside the existing kitchen and dining areas.

As the living area sits directly alongside the kitchen and dining space, it was important that the new furniture felt in keeping with the original kitchen. We retained a classic Shaker aesthetic to ensure continuity, while introducing subtle adjustments to soften the overall look and better suit a living environment.

This included the use of a Shaker door in a soft Putty tone, with a natural grain that introduces warmth and texture. Brushed-brass knob handles and oak accents in the open shelving areas further reinforce the transition from kitchen cabinetry to living room furniture.

Rather than designing a flat run of cabinetry, we approached the wall as a fully considered architectural feature. The central section was stepped forward to create depth and layering, forming a natural focal point around the television. This variation in depth adds visual interest across the full six-metre elevation, ensuring the wall feels balanced and engaging rather than uniform.

We introduced 75mm thick pilasters between the open shelving and to frame the central stepped section, adding structure and definition to the design. At the base, a carefully considered faux skirting plinth allows the units to sit naturally within the room, reinforcing the impression of a fully built-in architectural feature.

These considered details lend the cabinetry a sense of solidity and permanence, making the media wall feel integral to the home rather than an addition.

To accommodate the design brief, we included open shelving that sits above the base units, providing space for books and decorative objects, while maintaining a lighter, more relaxed feel across the upper half of the wall. Cabinetry storage runs along the lower section of the media wall, offering generous concealed storage for everyday living.

This project demonstrates how thoughtful, design-led furniture can transform an underused area into a purposeful and visually cohesive part of the home.

By referencing the original kitchen while adapting the detailing to suit a living environment, the finished media wall feels both connected and appropriate to its setting. It provides practical storage, display space, and a strong visual anchor in the room. The result is a calm, well-resolved living space that feels complete, a natural addition to the kitchen and dining area.
