10 Kitchen Trends for 2023
At the beginning of each year, our designers collate their insights on emerging interior design and kitchen trends to share with our clients. This year, we highlight the 10 key kitchen decor ideas for 2023 you need to know if you’re renovating your kitchen or home. Read on to discover the 10 top kitchen design trends for 2023.
1. Banquette Seating
As open-plan interior spaces evolve, our clients seek kitchen ideas to create a harmonious, comfortable, multi-functional living environment. As part of this evolution, banquette seating is growing in popularity and is our top kitchen idea for 2023. Banquette seating is an excellent kitchen feature to maximise the floorplan and zone the dining area and is a versatile seating option. Banquettes can offer a more relaxed and social dining experience too.
We go into more detail on the benefits in our Banquette Seating blog.
3. Ceramic Worktops & Splashbacks
Marble worktops have been trending in kitchen design for several years. However, as marble isn’t hardwearing, people have turned to more durable alternatives to achieve this look, such as ceramics. Ceramic kitchen finishes have become more refined over the years to offer exciting new design possibilities and functionality. Ceramics – also known as ultra-compact worktops or sintered stone – are engineered surfaces made from mineral colourings and ceramic clays. Ceramic worktops are incredibly durable, easy to maintain, hygienic, natural, available in various colours and finishes, and more affordable than granite or quartz.
A kitchen material with many benefits, ceramic has become popular and will continue to be in 2023. Want to know more about Ceramic worktops? Check out our dedicated blog on the topic here.
4. Japandi Style
Japandi-style has risen in popularity over the last couple of years, and it’s a hot trend right now that will inspire kitchen ideas for 2023. The term ‘Japandi’ was coined to describe the mix of two design disciplines, the ancient Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi and the Scandinavian hygge lifestyle.
Two styles from different continents, the Japandi style is the perfect mix of relaxed Scandinavian living and minimalistic and functional Japanese interior design. Japandi interior styles create warm, inviting spaces full of natural texture and tone. As we all look to our homes as a place of comfort and retreat, Japandi styles have become popular because they prioritise comfort, practicality, and well-being.
5. Glass
Glass never really went out of style but prepare to see more of this kitchen design feature in 2023. Over the last few years, frosted and mottled glass has been slowly fading in favour of a revival of reeded and tinted glass. Not only does reeded or tinted glass add a different design statement to plain glass, but when used as part of a cabinet door, the opaque appearance conceals what’s inside.
Expect to see these glass finishes appear in the form of glazed kitchen cabinets, splashbacks, room dividers, or internal doors, as well as flowing through to home decor accessories.
6. Curved Architecture & Furniture
Curved architecture and furniture will continue to trend in 2023. Curved architectural details are being used to soften hard lines and add interest, resulting in more casual and homely environments. Curves can be incorporated through forms, such as door arches, rounded kitchen worktops and curved cabinetry. Home décor featuring curves or soft circular motifs and patterns will also be used to create a similar impact, such as arched mirrors, rounded sofas and tables.
7. Smart Appliances & the Internet of Things
The global smart home market has been growing rapidly and smart appliances are a key trend in 2023. The internet of things is one of the biggest trends in the world of smart home technology. With connected smart home devices, homeowners are now able to control a variety of appliances, smart home gadgets and systems from one central hub such as a smartphone or smart TV. Our appliance partners offer a suite of smart appliances designed to help make life easier, whether it’s checking the contents of your fridge whilst out grocery shopping or sending a recipe direct to your oven, smart appliances are designed to streamline your day.
Smart appliances are also playing a part in helping homeowners reduce their carbon footprint and live more sustainably. Aside from the obvious smart thermostats, the interconnectivity of our kitchen appliances is helping to make our homes more energy efficient. Integrated WIFI connectivity, automation, remote control and monitoring, advanced cooking programmes, sensors and built-in cameras all help reduce energy and food waste.
8. Sustainability & Specification
Sustainability goes beyond trends and is becoming an integral part of modern life as environmental awareness grows. In 2023, as people place more value on sustainability the environmental impact of design choices will be a key consideration for anyone carrying out a home renovation.
Each year, the sustainable properties of products and materials are becoming more transparent and more sustainable options are being introduced. At KCA, we have a range of products that we have curated for clients that want to make more eco-friendly and sustainable choices without compromising on style. When it comes to design, we are designing spaces that allow families to live more sustainably, using ethically sourced, recycled and renewable materials, energy efficient appliances and LED lighting and water saving features.
9. Colour
Colours in interiors are currently inspired by two contrasting yet interconnected themes; bold statement colours and calming neutrals. Colour palettes continue to be strongly influenced by the natural world, from deep reds such as Pantone’s Viva Magenta inspired by cochineal to Verdigris and sage green. In 2023, these colours will flow to the kitchen as colourful cabinets or walls. Colour blocking will remain, and we’ll see wall paint colours continue onto the skirting, door frames and cornices.
While handpainted kitchens have always allowed a limitless colour choice, manufactured kitchens have been more restrictive. However, with advances in manufacturing, the leading manufacturers now offer a wide range of RAL colours. At KCA, our engineered shaker kitchens come in 200 colours, perfect for those looking for the durability of a manufactured finish and the freedom to find the exact shade. So, in 2023 expect to see more kitchens in unique colours as people embrace a more bespoke colour palette.
10. Fitted Living Furniture
An open-plan layout is at the top of the kitchen wish list for most home renovators. A kitchen is now expected to function as a multi-functional living space incorporating cooking, dining and living, so people are looking toward fitted furniture to tie their kitchen and living spaces together. In 2023 and the coming years, kitchen renovations will extend beyond the kitchen to incorporate more fitted furniture in the adjoining living spaces. Prepare to see TV units and media walls, sideboards, dressers and storage designed in a complementary style to the kitchen. Fitted furniture is a great solution to maximise storage and ensure every inch of a multi-functional living space works hard to make family living all the more comfortable and enjoyable.
