8 Essential Kitchen Storage Ideas
One of the most important considerations when creating a kitchen design is maximising the feeling of space and kitchen storage. If your cabinetry shelves and drawers are not planned around the way you cook, what you cook and how your kitchen is used, space is often wasted. The is nothing worse than having the cabinet space only to find that it’s too big or too small for what you intended to store. Poor storage solutions can also result in your worktop appliances finding their way on to your countertops, consuming valuable countertop space and potentially impacting your overall kitchen design.
A disorganised kitchen design can create a space that feels inconvenient and awkward to cook in. Nobody enjoys rummaging through all of their cabinets and drawers to find what they need. A well designed, functional kitchen space focuses on well-planned and organised storage.
To make your kitchen a fun place to cook and entertain we’ve put together 8 initial kitchen storage ideas to consider for your kitchen design.
1. Top box kitchen cabinets
Where possible we recommend taking your cabinetry to the ceiling. Taking your kitchen cabinets higher not only creates the illusion that your ceiling is taller, it also makes use of the space between the top of the kitchen cabinets and the ceiling which might otherwise be wasted. This top box storage is perfect for storing items that you use less frequently such as your finest dinner sets and crystal glasses.
2. Pull-out shelving, racks & LeMans shelves
By adding pull-out shelving, racks or LeMans systems you avoid having to reach, rummage and sort through your cabinets. Although some more competitively priced LeMans systems can be unreliable, investing in a high-quality corner storage system will make excellent use of the large space in your corner cabinet. Pull-out shelves can be particularly useful in the corner kitchen cabinets, making it easier to reach items at the back of the shelf.
3. Drawer organisers
When it comes to kitchen design, drawer organisers and dividers are nothing new but they still play a key role in your kitchen storage. Drawer organisers and dividers allow you to create sections within your drawer storage, maximising the available space whilst making it easier to find what you need.
4. Open shelving
Kitchen designs that incorporate open shelving create a utilitarian feel and allow you to keep your most useful items front and centre. The key to open shelving is keeping it simple, so make sure to pair down what you have on display to create that minimalist look.
5. Wine storage
Wine storage can take many forms within kitchen design, from a simple rack to store your bottles at room temperature, to an integrated wine cabinet from appliance brands such as Miele or Siemens. Integrated wine cabinets come with either one temperature zone (perfect if you tend to favour one type of wine), or two temperature zones, giving you the space to store your favourite red and white wines at the perfect temperatures.
6. Kitchen larders
The kitchen larder is the wardrobe of the kitchen. It’s a great place to store worktop appliances such as coffee machines, toasters, blenders and bread makers. A kitchen larder is also the perfect place to store dried foods, canned goods and root vegetables. If you opt for a bespoke kitchen you can even go as far as to customise your larder drawers with engraved labels such as ‘vegetables’ or ‘treats’.
7. Increased drawer heights
Drawer heights can be tailored to suit the items that you are storing. While this may not sound like the most important storage consideration, it is worth considering as there is nothing worse than finding that your cutlery drawers aren’t quite deep enough and that your ladle simply doesn’t fit!
8. Storage jars & containers
Whilst storage jars aren’t necessarily part of your kitchen design, they can be a great way to organise the contents of your cupboards and drawers. Opening a cupboard and seeing a row of identical jars neatly labelled pasta, rice and flour can be very satisfying for the soul.
